August 4 to 7, 11am to 10pm; Taste of Calgary, the city’s most appetizing festival, giving visitors the chance to sample the city’s food, beverages, music and other cool things. This year’s event takes place in a new location along the river pathway on the corner of 4 Avenue and 9 Street (right before the Louise Bridge into Kensington) in a surface parking lot. August 5 to 7, Calgary Dragon Boat Festival, as Calgary’s premier water sport festival, the Calgary Dragon Boat Race and Festival draws 1850 competitors, 4000 spectators and an abundance of excitement and cultural experiences. Every year, the Calgary Dragon Boat Society (CDBS) organizes Dragon Boat Race and Festival at North Glenmore Park to showcase culture and dragon boat racing in a family-friendly environment. August 6, 10am to 12pm; Storytime: The Little Grey Mouse, bring the whole family to Sparrow Artspace to hear Trudy Cowan read from her delightful, best-selling children’s book, The Little Grey Mouse: A Fable in Fabric. August 6, 6pm to 9:30pm; Floating Lantern Peace Ceremony, this summer family event is filled with music performance, inspirational speeches, and the beauty of lanterns on the pool at Olympic Plaza. August 6, 7pm; Movie Night at Trico Centre, Trico Centre and Green Door Preschool invite you to the second annual movie night, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. August 6, 1pm to 4pm; Superhero Day at the Library, visit your local Library for free, family fun! Kids can put their superhero skills to the test with games, crafts and more. August 6, 1pm to 3pm; Centennial Concert – Calgary Highlanders Regimental Pipes & Drums, celebrate 100 years of the Calgary Highlanders Regimental Pipes & Drums at Confluence Plaza, featuring the King’s Own Calgary Regiment band! The bands will play a selection of traditional and contemporary music, narrated with events over the past 100 years.
August 6, 12pm to 5pm; Hound ‘n Sound Centennial Celebration, the event will mark the centennial of the Calgary Humane Society and the completion of the facility’s enhancement project, a $14 million expansion of the shelter. Check out amazing local entertainment, featuring The Frontiers, carnival games for all ages, YYC Food Trucks, a beer area and a puppy cake smash at Calgary Humane Society Park. August 1 to 28; BUMP Festival, BUMP self-guided mural tours are a perfect way to explore the murals and experience new works of art as they are being created right before your eyes. New tours will be released throughout the month of August. The Beltline Urban Mural Project (BUMP) is a program that funds and installs art on buildings in the Beltline. Until August 27; Nooks and Crannies Festival in Okotoks, a festival where artists create temporary site-specific installations in downtown Okotoks. This art festival sees artists repurpose and animate forgotten places with ‘forgotten’ materials, bringing public art to forgotten corners of downtown Okotoks. This clinic will use classroom-based activities, as well as the Fish Hatchery and Discovery Centre aquariums to teach you how to fish responsibly by understanding Alberta’s sportfishing regulations, proper fish handling techniques, identifying different sportfish, and much more. Until October 26; Dinosaurs Awakened at The Calgary Zoo, get ready to marvel at the sights and sounds of these magnificent life-like creatures and see for yourself what Alberta might have looked like when dinosaurs reigned supreme. Until October 27; National Music Centre’s Jam Club, join the National Music Centre’s free after-school Jam Club program. Youth ages thirteen to nineteen are invited to jam, practice their skills, and explore their creative potential, all while making new friends, every Thursday at Studio Bell for free.
