Fun things to do in March

Take a fun hike to Troll Falls in Kananaskis. Everybody’s favorite easy spring hike, the trail is relatively flat, short (less than 4km return), and can even be enjoyed on mountain bikes. The proximity to Kananaskis Village also makes this hike popular as you can stop in for a bathroom break, snack, or lunch.

Go skating in Bowness Park. At Bowness Park, you can skate on the lagoon, inlets and ice trails. It is also one of the rinks in Calgary that offer skate rentals, stabilization bar rentals, and skate sharpening on site. If skating isn’t your thing, hop on an ice bike. The front wheel has been replaced with skates and the back wheel is surrounded by skates. With a wide base, you don’t even have to balance. Just pedal and steer as if you’re riding a normal bike. Heritage Park Storytime. Bring the kids to Heritage Park and visit a variety of locations in the park for story time every Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:30am. Visit Devonian Gardens. Devonian Gardens is an urban oasis in the heart of Calgary that offers one hectare of botanical gardens including over 500 trees, 50 varieties of plants, a 900-sqaure-foot living wall, fountains, fish ponds and a playground to climb and explor​​e.​​ Learn more at calgary.ca.

Try your hand at Crokicurl. Try out Canada’s newest winter pastime! Crokicurl is a fun new outdoor sport that combines two Canadian favorites – Crokinole and curling. Crokicurl is a large-scale version of the Crokinole board game combined with curling. Create your own indoor art tour. Get the kids out of the house to explore something new without worrying about unpredictable Alberta weather. Take a walk through the Plus 15 network start at the main floor of City Hall at the south entrance near a parking pay station. From there, walk through Arts Common and make your way to the Glenbow Museum and the TELUS Convention Centre. Try tubing at a local ski hill.  Tubing is easy, gentle on the body, and requires no athletic ability. To try the closest tube park, visit WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park. Other nearby tube park options include Nakiska ski area and Mount Norquay.

Get geocaching on trails around Calgary. Geocaching is a great year-round activity that can be played in City parks and natural areas. Get started by loading the geocaching app on your phone and bring a small kit with you. Your kit should include a few trinkets that you will trade with other small items you find in the caches, a pencil for signing logbooks (and paper, in case the logbook is full), and hand sanitizer.

Get wild! Visit the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary.  See these majestic animals in a natural habitat at the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary near Cochrane. Take a guided tour to learn about the wolfdogs and see them interact up close and personal. You even have a chance to feed the Wolfdogs and hang out with them.
