Unforgettable Autumn Family Adventures Around Calgary
On October 6, 2026 by Calgary's ChildBy Stacie Gaetz
As autumn rolls in, Calgary offers views of golden poplars, crisp fall breezes, and cozy afternoons. While scheduled fall festivals and organized events are fantastic, sometimes the best family memories are made when you simply pack a thermos, gather the kids, and set out to explore at your own pace.
If you are looking for easy, spontaneous weekend outings outside of the community event calendar, here is your guide to picturesque fall walks, standout playgrounds, cozy hot chocolate stops, and a scenic drive the whole family will love.
Scenic Fall Walks
Nothing captures the magic of autumn quite like crunchy leaves underfoot and golden canopies overhead.
Fish Creek Provincial Park (Shannon Terrace): Located in Calgary’s south, Fish Creek is one of the largest urban parks in North America. Head to the Shannon Terrace area for a peaceful walk along paved and gravel pathways lined with towering balsam poplars and aspens. The gentle terrain makes it easy for strollers and little legs. Keep your eyes peeled for deer, woodpeckers, and chickadees flitting through the yellow leaves.
Bowness Park: Nestled along the Bow River in the northwest, Bowness Park offers flat, accessible walking loops shaded by mature trees. Kids love watching the ducks along the lagoon and running across the wooden footbridges. The paved pathways are perfect for wagon rides or early tricycle practice.
Standout Playgrounds & Parks
Autumn weather brings ideal temperatures for outdoor play — cool enough to run around without overheating, but warm enough to enjoy hours at the park.
Currie Barracks Airport Playground: Located in the southwest community of Currie, this aviation-themed playground is a massive hit for children of all ages. Featuring a giant control tower with high slides, a wooden airplane climber, and ziplines, it provides endless imaginative play while parents relax on surrounding benches framed by autumn foliage.
Prairie Winds Park: In the northeast, this expansive park features a zip-line, climbing structures, a running track, and a massive artificial hill that offers great views. This one is great for older kids who might think smaller playgrounds are “lame.”
Cozy Hot Chocolate Stops
After an hour or two of brisk outdoor exploration, nothing delights kids (and parents) quite like a warm, sweet treat.
Higher Ground Cafe (Kensington): A beloved neighborhood staple in Kensington, Higher Ground Cafe offers a warm, inviting atmosphere with plush seating. Their rich, velvety hot chocolate is my family’s favorite because it can be customized with whipped cream and cozy syrups. This is a perfect pitstop after a walk along the nearby Bow River pathway.
Monogram Coffee (Britannia or University District): Renowned for high-quality brews for parents, Monogram Coffee also serves exceptional steamed hot chocolates crafted with premium ingredients — the ultimate reward after a chilly park visit.
Take the Scenic Route: A Family Day Drive
When you want to take in the breathtaking foothills foliage without venturing too far into the mountains, a quick countryside drive provides stunning views and zero stress.
Highway 22 & Bragg Creek Loop: Head west out of Calgary on Highway 8 towards Bragg Creek. As you drive, watch the rolling green hills gradually blend into golden groves of aspen trees with the Rocky Mountains forming a dramatic backdrop. Once you arrive in the charming village of Bragg Creek, take a relaxed stroll through the local shops or grab a bite to eat before taking Highway 22 (the Cowboy Trail) back toward Cochrane or Calgary.
The loop offers gorgeous autumn views right from your car window—ideal for an afternoon nap time drive for toddlers and beautiful enough to keep your older kids off screens (for a while).
Quick Tips for Autumn Family Outings
- Layer Up: Calgary’s fall weather changes quickly. Pack mittens, hats, and extra fleece layers in the trunk.
- Pack a Leaf Kit: Bring a small bag or basket so kids can collect their favorite fallen leaves, pinecones, and acorns to make crafts at home later.
- Golden Hour Timing: Plan your outdoor walk for late afternoon (around 3pm to 5 pm) to catch the warm glow. Golden sunlight filtering through the trees makes for incredible family photos!
Embrace the changing seasons this weekend by picking a neighborhood or trail you haven’t visited yet, grabbing a warm cup of cocoa, and enjoying the simple beauty of fall in Calgary and area.
