Remembrance Day in Calgary – November 11, 2020
On November 10, 2020 by Calgary's ChildMany of the traditional Remembrance Day celebrations this year have been altered due to the current public health restrictions. Join us in observing Remembrance Day with one of the alternative services listed below, or observe a moment of silence in your own home.
The Field of Crosses
On the evening of November 10th, candles will be placed in front of each cross on display along Memorial Drive. The candles will burn until sunrise. The park will be closed from 11am until 4pm to allow volunteers to set up candles.
There will be no sunrise ceremony on November 11th this year.
The Remembrance Day Ceremony will be a virtual event broadcast live by Global Calgary and live streamed (click here for the livestream). Only those taking part in the ceremony will be allowed into the park, which will be closed to the public until 2PM.
Alberta Health Services requests that crowds do not congregate off-site or along Memorial Drive to try to observe the ceremony.
After 2pm on November 11th the park will be open to the public, but there will be a limit of 100 people in the field at any one time.
Hangar Flight Museum
This year the ceremony will not be open to the public, and will instead be broadcast live by CTV Calgary beginning at 10:57am.
The museum will be open from 1pm-5pm for admission by donation, but timed tickets must be purchased online in advance. (Live stream available here).
The Military Museums
The service at the Military Museum will be by invitation-only. This ceremony will be live-streamed on their Facebook page beginning at 10:20am, and will also be broadcast on CTV.
The museum will be open to the public for free with pre-reserved tickets only from 1pm – 6pm. There will be a pre-designated path through the museum that attendees are encouraged to follow as well as a time guideline of 1 hour per visit. (Live stream available here).
Canadian Pacific Headquarters
This tradition of service continues every year, with every CP locomotive sounding its whistle at 11:01 am local time – if safe to do so – to start a moment of silence.
However, the ceremony – which pays tribute to the more than 33, 0000 CP employees who have served – will be private this year. The service will be live-streamed beginning at 10:45 am. (Live stream available here).
Okotoks Remembrance Day Ceremony
Join the annual Okotoks Remembrance Day Service via live stream beginning at 10:45 am. The service will be limited in content due to COVID-19, but will provide a moment for reflecting, honoring and remembering those who have served our country as well as the 75th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
The service is supported by the Royal Canadian Legion, in conjunction with the Town of Okotoks. (Live stream available here).
Canadian War Museum Remembrance Day Ceremony
Join with Canadians across the country and pay tribute in this live streamed event from Ottawa. On November 11, at exactly 11 am (EST), sunlight enters through a single window in the Canadian War Museum’s Memorial Hall, illuminating the headstone of Canada’s Unknown Solider. The live stream will begin at 10:40 am (EST) and will continue to be available online until November 16th at noon (EST). (Live stream available here).
Notinikew (Going to War) – a Program of Remembrance
This online event is free to view, although donations are greatly appreciated. The event provides an opportunity for reflection and remembrance of Canada’s Indigenous Veterans, and will be presented through choral music, poetry, and dance. The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir welcomes guest curator Andrew Balfour for this program. (Live stream available here).
Remembrance Day at The Inn on Officers’ Garden – 150 Dieppe Dr. SW
Join with Chaplin Northcott for a blessing with a moment of silence for those who have served and fallen. This event is free to all members of the public and will be held from 1pm – 2pm. (Please observe COVID-19 precautions).
Battalion Park – 3001 Signal Hill Dr. SW
There will be no formal ceremony at this location this year, but the public may visit Battalion Park to pay respects to the fallen. (Please observe COVID-19 precautions).
Central Memorial Park – 1221 2 St. SW
There will be no formal ceremony at this location this year, but the Cenotaph remains open to the public. (Please observe COVID-19 precautions).
