Calgary’s Secret Circus
On June 8, 2021 by Calgary's ChildPROVIDED BY GREEN FOOLS CIRCUS
When you think of circus you might imagine a midway with a big top, games, and popcorn. Or maybe you think of Cirque De Soleil. Tight rope walkers! Aerialists! Jugglers!
Did you know that there is a circus company right here in Calgary? Green Fools Theatre has been around for almost thirty years and is focused on helping children through circus. Beginning as a performance company, Green Fools then started teaching circus at festivals. Then in Northern Alberta. Then as far away as Africa! All of these experiences led to bringing circus back to Calgary children! But what is it that’s so great about circus?
Active
It keeps children active, with over ten different skills to learn including juggling, stilt walking and aerial skills. There is something for everyone! Skills like juggling, poi, and diabolo help develop hand eye coordination. Tightwire, slackline, rola-bola, and unicycling build balance. Spinning plates and diabolo develop motor skills. A week full of circus will build strength and flexibility!
Non-competitive
Circus camp is a non-competitive environment. Children get the opportunity to challenge themselves. As they practice, they build physical endurance and mental resilience. “Trying again” is a huge part of circus camp! Children work at their own pace and there is always a new level to achieve. No matter their skill level, children will always be engaged.
Collaboration
While children develop their skills individually, there is also a focus on team work. As children master new skills, they are able to help out their friends. Activities like acrobatics allow children to work together to create pyramids and partnered balancing.
Creativity
Is your child creative? They will love focusing on presentation and performing their skills. They’ll get to come up with the perfect order to show off their tricks!
Physical Vocabulary
Circus is also a great fit for children who are learning English. Since the instruction is by example, kids are still able to follow along and participate. By creating a physical vocabulary, perfect English is not a requirement! Green Fools is also offering a Francophone circus and aerial camp in both French and English.
Confidence
Children come out of their shells during circus camp. Their confidence grows as they get better at their skills. Plus, they get to meet other children who share their interests. As they work together and help each other, children build community and friendships.
Green fools is offering summer camps for ages 8-13 in July and August 2021. To register, go to Greenfools.com/kids-classes/. Class sizes are limited so register now to guarantee your spot!
